Through newborn screenings, in-house testing, and outside referrals, Community Health Interventions and Sickle Cell Agency, Inc. is informed of individuals who have Sickle Cell Trait. In an effort to reduce the number of individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, CHISCA staff conducts Trait Counseling Sessions in the office, in client homes, and at surrounding health departments. Through print materials, powerpoint presentations, and open conversations the trait counseling staff educates the client about Sickle Cell Trait, Sickle Cell Disease, the complications of Sickle Cell Disease, how Sickle Cell Disease is inherited, who can have Sickle Cell Disease and Trait, and the importance of knowing your sickle cell status. We gauge client knowledge and understanding through verbal clarification of pre and post-tests.
